Microsoft takes off gloves against Google

In a blog post entitled "Competition Authorities and Search," Microsoft Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Dave Heiner said part of the motivation for Microsoft and Yahoos search deal was "we are concerned about Google business practices that tend to lock in publishers and advertisers and make it harder for Microsoft to gain search volume." The post comes at the end of a week in which European authorities asked Google to explain its search algorithms after complaints from competitors--one of which is owned by Microsoft. "Microsoft would obviously be among the first to say that leading firms should not be punished for their success," Heiner wrote in one of Microsofts strongest public statements regarding Google to date. "Our concerns relate only to Google practices that tend to lock in business partners and content (like Google Books) and exclude competitors, thereby undermining competition more broadly." A Google representative declined to comment on Microsofts post. For all the obsession about Googles supposedly deteriorating relationship with Apple, make no mistake: the two most diametrically opposed companies in the tech industry are Microsoft and Google. The two titans are increasingly locked in a struggle to define the next generation of computing.

Lady Demands Rs 25 Lakh Compensation From Salman Khan

Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who is known for his charity and his generosity towards his fans, found his actions being questioned by someone who not too long ago was at the receiving end of his charm. A 30-year-old physically challenged lady has accused him of using her photographs to promote his film Veer and is also demanding to be compensated, reports Mumbai Mirror. In April 2009, when Salman was shooting at Mehboob Studio, physically-challenged Phoolbanu Bakshi Sheikh insisted on meeting the star. When the actor’s assistant on the sets told her he was busy and could not meet her, Sheikh refused to leave until her demand was met. According to reports, the commotion drew Salman out of the vanity van. He met Sheikh who was accompanied with two more women on the sets, and chatted with all of them for over an hour. Reports also stated that the actor had donated Rs 1lakh to Sheikh. Almost nine months after the incident, Sheikh has now accused the actor of using her photographs to show his softer side for promoting Veer. Sheikh complained, “It is true, I wanted to meet Salman badly. I am a poor woman and have been paralysed since birth. I used to worship Salman since I was a child. I am grateful to him as he gave us his precious time despite his hectic schedule. But I was pained to know that it was just for publicising his film.” “We have filed a complaint with Girgaon metropolitan magistrate court and have demanded Rs 25 lakh as compensation,” said Iqbal Solekar, the complainant’s lawyer.Salman’s secretary Vikas Kapoor said, “We are unaware of this defamation filed against Salman and do you think Salman would do anything just to promote his film?”

Pak Boy On Trial For Crossing Over To India

Mohammad Ateeq, 13, who reached India on board the Samjhauta Express on January 11, is scheduled to have charges framed by a local court on Friday for travelling to India without valid documents, reports Mail Today. Ateeq ran away from his home in Pakistan’s Punjab province after his father Malik Iftikhar stopped him from flying kites. The Pakistani government has banned flying kites in the province. In Lahore, Ateeq took shelter and fell asleep in a railway bogie. The bogie was attached to the Samjhauta Express the next morning without a proper security check and his presence was not detected. When he reached Attari railway station, Indian immigration officials detained him after they found that he did not possess any travel documents. He was then sent to a juvenile home after being booked under the Indian Passport Act and the Foreigners Act. Human rights activists in Pakistan and India have appealed to the foreign ministry and the Union home minister to act leniently towards Ateeq as he had crossed the border in innocence. Ranjan Lakhanpal, a Chandigarh- based human rights activist, has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court for withdrawal of cases against the boy and sending him back to Pakistan.

KKR camp begins on Saturday

"Our players were busy with domestic commitments for the entire season. Now it is time to assemble and tune up ahead of the IPL," Knight Riders CEO Joydeep Bhattacharya told PTI. "Shah Rukh will be coming on March 3 and the camp will be conducted under the supervision of coach Dav Whatmore, (mentor) Wasim Akram and (captain) Sourav Ganguly," Bhattacharya said. Players will join the camp depending on availability as it will continue till the IPL begins on April 12, Bhattacharya said. Asked about the availibility of foreign players including their new recruit Shane Bond who is at present busy with New Zealands home series against Australia, he said, "They are expected, depending on their availibility." The 1996 World Cup winning Sri Lankan coach, Whatmore, is already in town, while Akram will join the side on March 2. The availability of Ganguly, who is representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, depends on the teams progress in the National One-dayers in which they face Karnataka in the semi-final at Vadodara tomorrow. The side will also have support staff in Vijay Dahiya (assistant coach), Andrew Leipus (physiotherapist) and Adrian le Roux (trainer). KKR will open their campaign against reigning champions Deccan Chargers in the inaugural match of the third edition of the IPL at DY Patil Grounds in Mumbai on April 12.

Microsoft drops Cryptome spy document fight

Microsoft has withdrawn a copyright complaint against the Cryptome site over its publication of internal Microsoft guidelines for how the software giant can provide user data to law enforcement. Cryptome, a watchdog site that publishes sensitive corporate and government documents, was taken offline after Microsoft complained Wednesday about its publishing the document "Microsoft Global Criminal Compliance Handbook," also referred to as Microsofts Surveillance Guide, citing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Microsoft on Thursday morning notified Network Solutions that it was withdrawing its complaint and the domain registrar put the Cryptome site back online, said Network Solutions spokeswoman Susan Wade. Links to the Microsoft guide were in the Cryptome site late on Thursday. The site also includes what it calls "lawful spy guides" from PayPal, MySpace, Facebook, Cox and Yahoo, among other companies. A Microsoft spokesperson did not say why the company has reversed its stance. "Like all service providers, Microsoft must respond to lawful requests from law enforcement agencies to provide information related to criminal investigations," a Microsoft spokesperson had said in earlier a statement. "We take our responsibility to protect our customers privacy very seriously, so have specific guidelines that we use when responding to law enforcement requests. In this case, we did not ask that this site be taken down, only that Microsoft copyrighted content be removed. We are requesting to have the site restored and are no longer seeking the documents removal."

Australia cruise past Black Caps

Set a paltry 119 to win, the visitors reached their target with 24 balls to spare to complete the comfortable victory - their fourth in as many Twenty20 matches against the Black Caps. Having bowled out New Zealand for 118 - their lowest Twenty20 total against Australia - the visitors began their run chase in brutal fashion before two quick wickets from Shane Bond and another from Daniel Vettori pegged them back to 39 for three. But a 67-run stand between David Hussey, who fell just four runs shy of his half-century, and skipper Michael Clarke broke the back of the run-chase and it was left to Cameron White (11 not out) to smash the match-winning six. Click here for match scorecard Openers David Warner and Shane Watson went straight on the attack with Warner taking nine runs off Bonds opening over before Watson smacked four boundaries and ran a quick double to take 18 off Daryl Tuffeys first six deliveries. But Bond responded in fine fashion in his next over, bowling the young left-hander for 19 before he had had time to showcase his switch-hitting skills. Vettori then trapped Watson leg before wicket for the same score and Bond grabbed his second when Mitchell Johnson, elevated up the order, played onto his stumps. Hussey hit five boundaries in his 36-ball 46 - including three in one Nathan McCullum over - while Clarkes unbeaten 18 came at the rather more sedate pace of 26 deliveries.

People who get bored easily, die early

Can you really be bored to death? In a commentary to be published in the International Journal of Epidemiology in April, experts say theres a possibility that the more bored you are, the more likely you are to die early. Annie Britton and Martin Shipley of University College London caution that boredom alone isnt likely to kill you, but it could be a symptom of other risky behaviour like drinking, smoking, taking drugs or having a psychological problem. The researchers analyzed questionnaires completed between 1985 and 1988 by more than 7,500 London civil servants ages 35 to 55. The civil servants were asked if they had felt bored at work during the previous month. Britton and Shipley then tracked down how many of the participants had died by April 2009. Those who reported they had been very bored were two and a half times more likely to die of a heart problem than those who hadnt reported being bored. But when the authors made a statistical adjustment for other potential risk factors, like physical activity levels and employment grade, the effect was reduced. Other experts said while the research was preliminary, the link between boredom and increased heart problems was possible, if not direct. ``Someone who is bored may not be motivated to eat well, exercise, and have a heart-healthy lifestyle. That may make them more likely to have a cardiovascular event, said Dr. Christopher Cannon, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard University and spokesman for the American College of Cardiology.

Dog Scalps 5-year-old Boy In Gloucester, Owner Let Off

A crazy Rottweiler dog in Gloucester, UK, savagely "scalped" a five-year-old boy – Rhys Webb, who needed almost 100 stiches, but its owner was let off, reports The Sun, London. He was left permanently scarred and will never grow hair on parts of his head. But the owner of the dog - named Rocky - avoided prosecution because the animal was not in his care when the attack happened. Rhys and his two brothers were playing in a communal garden in Rainham, Essex, when the dog charged round the corner, sank its teeth into his head and shook him from side to side. Dad Andrew, 28, said: "The dog made a bee-line for Rhys, totally unprovoked. It sunk its teeth into his head and Rhys tried to run, but the dog got his head like a football.

Schedule sex To ensure sex doesn’t fall off the priority chart, decide in advance when to make love. Then, just do it! It may sound unromantic, but it’s better to have a quickie session than none at all. Be appreciative Showing appreciation regularly not only makes you feel better about yourself, it gives a romantic boost to your relationship. It takes you back in time, when you spent time appreciating and adoring your partner. Share housework Housework can be a source of niggling arguments. So divide the jobs, and together work out who does what and when. This cuts out resentment – one of the single biggest reasons why women stop wanting sex. Bedroom spunk De-clutter the bedroom. Make the bed look inviting, use scented candles and put up pictures of just the two of you. Ban laptops, TV and everything work related. Have a good argument Voicing a disagreement prevents any resentment from building up, but a blame game is a no-no. Once this is done, move on and keep the past where it belongs! Go dancing Just turn on some music and dance. Dancing flushes the human system with dopamine, which means you feel happier and the happiness is further carried to the bedroom.

Quicken for the Mac: Finally!

It contained a beta version of the companys long-overdue update of the Mac version of Quicken, called Quicken Financial Life. Eagerly awaiting its release were Mac users who needed a personal finance app with some meat on its bones. They were getting frustrated with Quickens maker, Intuit. The ancient Quicken 2007, which was the last new version of Quicken for the Mac, was so unloved that you didnt have to look far to find people running Windows (inside Parallels or VMWare Fusion) on their Macs just so they could use one of the grown-up versions of Quicken that was available for the PC. QFL never saw the light of day. It was unloved even inside Intuit. Before the product could make it out of beta, Intuit bought Mint.com, the upstart online personal financial information company. Mints CEO, Aaron Patzer (interview), became the general manager of Intuits Personal Finance Group, and took as one of his first jobs overseeing the re-creation of Quicken Financial Life into Quicken Essentials. Features were dropped from QFL, the interface was redesigned, and Patzer made sure new users could set up the product in 10 to 15 minutes. Quicken Essentials, the first new version of Quicken for the Mac since 2007, finally ships Thursday, at a retail price of $59.99.

Meanwhile, South Africa have nothing but pride to play for in their third and final cricket one-dayer in Ahmedabad on Saturday. The home team will be without more than half a dozen key players in the dead rubber, some missing from action from the start of the series and others - including champion batsman Sachin Tendulkar - skipping the tie. Tendulkar, in particular, will be missed after his awe-inspiring and phenomenal knock of 200 not out at Gwalior that shattered the Proteas dreams of winning a one-day series in India for the first time ever. The batting great has obtained a break to recharge his batteries for the upcoming Indian Premier League after becoming the first player in the nearly four-decade-old one-day game to make a double ton at the international level with his unbeaten innings which came off just 147 balls. Tendulkars absence, the back problem to Virender Sehwag and the wrist injury to Gautam Gambhir, have necessitated the inclusion of the uncapped Murali Vijay of Tamil Nadu to open the batting with his state-mate Dinesh Karthik. Vijay, who has played four Tests in his fledgling career, thus gets a chance to show his worth in the 50-over format of the game by default at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in Motera.

Zen meditation fends off pain: Study

University of Montreal researchers compared the grey matter thickness of 17 Zen meditators and 18 non-meditators and found evidence that practising the centuries-old discipline can reinforce a central part of the brain called the anterior cingulate. "Through training, Zen meditators appear to thicken certain areas of their cortex and this appears to underlie their lower sensitivity to pain," lead author Joshua Grant said in a statement. Building on an earlier study, the researchers measured thermal pain sensitivity by applying a heated plate to the calf of participants. This was followed by scanning the brains of subjects with structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The MRI results showed central brain regions that regulate emotion and pain were significantly thicker in meditators compared to non-meditators. "The often painful posture associated with Zen meditation may lead to thicker cortex and lower pain sensitivity," Grant opined. The study was published yesterday in a special issue of the American Psychological Association journal, Emotion. In the previous study, the researchers recruited Zen meditators with more than 1,000 hours of practice and non-meditators and measured their respective tolerance to pain.

That My Name is Khan is one of the biggest Bollywood global grossers ever is not just a professional triumph for two of the Hindi film industry’s most powerful names — Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar; it’s also a personal victory for them. “Every time we have come together, something special has happened,” says the Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan. SRK, who has witnessed Karan’s graph rise with each of their films — be it Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho or Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and now My Name is Khan, smiles affectionately as he remembers their first meeting. “He was very young when he came to me to make Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. But even then, he was crystal clear in what he wanted to say,” he remembers. “With each passing film I have seen him grow in stature as a person and as a film-maker. Karan is family. Gauri and my kids — Aryan and Suhana — love him. And I feel a personal pride in seeing him scale the heights he has,” he adds. For Karan, the journey of Khan is an emotional high. “Well, I’m ecstatic that the film has become the global phenomenon that it has. It has broken records,’’ says Karan. “But for me, what is of even more significance is the fact that SRK and I have an emotional connect. This makes our professional triumph even more special.” He admits that giving five-record-breaking films together is the result of “great synergy between the both of us. And, what makes this record even more meaningful for me is the fact that Shah Rukh and I share an emotional bond.

Facebook to developers: Get ready for Credits

Facebooks virtual currency, "Facebook Credits," is getting very close to its full launch: a post on the Facebook developer blog explains some of the full terms of the system and what developers can expect as the currency continues to roll out slowly. "Today more than 500,000 applications exist on Facebook, and the virtual goods within those applications (particularly games) have become an increasingly valuable part of the user experience," the post explained. "By providing a single, cross-application currency, our goal is to [make] transactions simpler for users, leading to a higher conversion rate for developers. Specifically, our early testing has shown that users paying with Facebook Credits are significantly more likely to complete a purchase than the average Facebook user." Developers will need to believe in that incentive: Facebook plans to take a full 30 percent cut of Credits transactions. Some developers have already denounced that as too expensive. Facebook will have to give them the hard sell in order to win them over, as many third-party currency start-ups have already flooded the developer platform, and there are consequently lots of other options out there.

Ashraful left out of Bangladesh squad

Ashraful has long been considered one of his countrys most talented batsman but has been rested from the series after some indifferent recent form. Shakib Al Hasan captains the side, while the likes of Junaid Siddique, Naeem Islam and Aftab Ahmed have been selected having played for the BCB XI in warm-up matches against England this week. Explaining Ashrafuls absence chairman of selectors Rafiqul Alam said: "Ashraful himself wanted a break and we also felt that the pressure on him had increased to the extent that his confidence was suffering. "We believe that a gap from international cricket would be beneficial for him and he will come back strongly soon and do justice to his calibre." Fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza returns after recuperating for nearly seven months following a knee surgery. Alam added: "He has also been declared fit by his doctor. Someone like Mortaza has got nothing to prove regarding his ability and we have confidence in him. He is a big match player."

Red wine, dark chocolate kill cancer

Red grapes and dark chocolate join blueberries, garlic, soy, and teas as ingredients that starve cancer while feeding bodies, Angiogenesis Foundation head William Li said at a prestigious TED Conference. "We are rating foods based on their cancer-fighting qualities," Li said. "What we eat is really our chemotherapy three times a day." The Massachusetts-based foundation is identifying foods containing chemicals that evidently choke-off blood supplies to tumors, starving them to death. Li cited a Harvard Medical School study showing that men who ate cooked tomatoes several times weekly were 30 to 50 per cent less likely to have prostate cancer. "There is a medical revolution happening all around us," Li said. "If were right, it could impact on consumer education, food service, public health, and even insurance agencies." About a dozen drugs are already in use to deprive tumors of blood supplies in a treatment tactic called "anti-angiogenesis.

Pak Pitches For Resumption Of Composite Dialogue

Pakistan on Thursday strongly pitched for resumption of the composite dialogue with India saying it was "unfair, unrealistic and counter-productive" to allow the issue of terrorism to stall the process of improving relations between the two countries. After a delegation-level meeting with his Indian counterpart Nirupama Rao in Delhi, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said Pakistan looks forward to reversing the "tide of regression" that has taken place in the relationship between the neighbours after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Bashir also said the core issue remained Jammu and Kashmir and expressed willingness to address and resolve outstanding issues of Siachen and Sir Creek which he believed were "do-able". Both Rao and Bashir held separate press meets after their three-and-a-half hour one-to-one and delegation-level talks. While Rao said in response to a question that Kashmir figured briefly in the talks, Bashir disagreed saying it was discussed "extensively". "It is unfair, unrealistic and counter-productive to make issue of terrorism in a generic way and stall the process of overall relations between both the countries," Bashir said. "To create optics of dialogue without substance means we are not taking (the) relationship seriously or dealing with (the) issues seriously," he said. The top diplomat said his country does not believe in "cosmetic engagement" and did not want India to "lecture" them by demanding that Pakistan should "do this or that". He was of the view that there was a "huge gap between expectations and mistrust" that exists between both the countries today. Bashir also said, "One cannot be really dismissive about the issue of Kashmir and any effort to be dismissive to the issue will not be helpful...Pakistan will continue to support politically, diplomatically and morally the struggle of Kashmiri people." He complimented Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying the Indian leader has a vision for a peaceful and prosperous South Asia. Accusing India of portraying Pakistan as the source of terrorism, Bashir said Pakistan does not like to be "sermoned" on terrorism and that they knew how to deal with it. "If you keep saying that Pakistan is a source of all your troubles, I am sorry, it is short-sightedness," he said.

First Look: Nintendo DSi XL

It was just about a year ago that Nintendo released the DSi handheld system, the next evolutionary iteration of the companys hugely popular DS portable hardware. Boasting two tiny cameras and larger screens, we only recommended the device for those who were new to the world of DS gaming or wanted access to the online DSi Shop. At a press conference Wednesday morning in San Francisco, Nintendo officially unveiled the remaining details about the next DS to hit North America. The DSi XL features even larger screens (93 percent bigger compared with the DS Lite) and has a much wider viewing angle. Set to go for $190, well see the DSi XL in stores on March 28 in two colors (burgundy and bronze). We got some hands-on time with the DSi XL earlier this month and were instantly surprised by its weight. Its noticeably heavier than both the DSi Lite and DSi, but we actually enjoyed the sturdiness. Obviously, the most notable detail about the DSi XL is its size, and while our Nintendo rep said its still "pocketable," we cant imagine a scenario where the DSi XL would fit comfortably in a pair of jeans. When we first flipped the DSi XL open, we were blown away by the two enormous screens. Even more impressive was the fact that video quality didnt seem to suffer as a result of enlarging games beyond the size of their native aspect. While we had fears about pixilated performance when the XL was first announced, were happy to report that games look great, as our demo with Mario Kart DS proved.

Warne denies bust-up with Ponting

"There was no heated disagreement between me and Ricky," said Warne, who led the Jaipur-based Rajasthan Royals to a fairytale triumph in the first edition of the cash-awash league. "Were mates, we get along fine. There were a lot of people asking (Australian Cricketers Association chief executive) Paul Marsh for clarity on some issues. I think thats healthy. Everyones entitled to their own opinion," Warne was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph. A report in The Australian, however, claimed that the cricketers were "at each others throats" during a security briefing in Sydney yesterday. According to the daily, freelance former players like Warne, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist are all for playing in the IPL, while majority of the Cricket Australia-contracted players are little cagey about it. "It is understood the past players, including Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist clashed with Australias captain Ricky Ponting during the meeting," the report claimed, quoting sources. . ACA chief executive Paul Marsh, however, was confident that the players would show solidarity till the issue is resolved. "Thats something we are still working through, its the way we have operated in the past and I guess we have a couple of weeks to work through that," Marsh said.

If you are a braveheart, Phoonk 2 can fetch you Rs.500,000

"I am sure Phoonk 2 is very, very scary and I am sure no one would leave the theatre without getting scared. So we will do a contest under some scientific observation," said Varma. "Someone who says he wont be scared while watching the film will be shown Phoonk 2 in a theatre alone. He will be attached to an ECG machine to monitor his heart beat and the machine will be connected to a screen outside the hall. If his heart beat stays normal, he will win Rs.500,000," added Varma. Varma says he has consulted a doctor about the contest. "The doctor says if an average man is subjected to extreme emotion, his heart beat goes up and one of the emotions could be fear. So, if a man sitting in a theatre is not showing any physical activity except watching a film and while watching the film, if his heart beat goes up, it will be something in response to what he watches on screen. In a film like Phoonk 2 the emotion will be only fear," said Varma. Asked what if a viewer gets a heart attack, he said: "Firstly, the person who would dare enter this contest will have to sign a bond where it will mentioned that we are not responsible for his death. But there will be an ambulance and doctor outside the theatre." Phoonk 2 was unveiled Monday. The contest will continue until it releases commercially April 9. Directed by debutant Milind Gadagkar, Phoonk 2 is the sequel of Phoonk which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and the cast remains same.

Saudi Arabia Gears Up To Receive Manmohan

Major streets of Saudi Arabias capital Riyadh have been decked up with Indian flags to welcome Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is scheduled to arrive here late this week on an important official visit to the Kingdom. Senior officials from the two countries are busy making arrangements to host the Indian political and business leaders as well as fine-tune several agreements to be signed during the visit, the first by an Indian premier since 1982. "The visit of Prime Minister Singh, which takes place four years after the Saudi King Abdullahs visit to New Delhi, will boost Saudi-Indo relations further and change the dynamics of our strategic ties," Saudi Ambassador to India Faisal H Trad was quoted by Arab News as saying. Trad said that some 11 agreements, including an extradition treaty, had been finalised for signing during the three-day official visit of Singh, who will be accompanied by ministers and senior officials. "History will be made in Saudi-Indo relations when Singh holds talks with King Abdullah," said Trad. A media office has been set up by the Indian Embassy at the Riyadh Palace Hotel to help local journalists and take care of the needs of the newspersons accompanying the premier. Referring to major agreements to be signed during the visit, Trad pointed out that an agreement to promote media cooperation involving the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) and the Press Trust of India (PTI) would be signed. This will be in addition to a MoU to be signed by the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences and Indias Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. Another MoU will be signed to promote cultural cooperation by organising cultural weeks and events in respective countries.

Simple tips to boost happiness

Earlier, scientists had suggested happiness is primarily determined by genetics, health and other factors mostly outside of our control, reports the China Daily . Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky of the University of California, Riverside, said: "The billion-dollar question is, is it possible to become happier?" "Despite the finding that happiness is partially genetically determined, and despite the finding that life situations have a smaller influence on our happiness than we think they do, we argue that still a large portion of happiness is in our power to change." After analysing 51 studies, that tested attempts to increase happiness, Lyubomirsky has jotted down five things that can improve happiness: 1. Be grateful - Some study participants were asked to write letters of gratitude to people who had helped them in some way. The study found that these people reported a lasting increase in happiness - over weeks and even months - after implementing the habit. 2. Be optimistic - Study participants were asked to visualize an ideal future - for example, living with a loving and supportive partner, or finding a job that was fulfilling - and describe the image in a journal entry. After doing this for a few weeks, these people too reported increased feelings of well-being. 3. Count your blessings - People who practice writing down three good things that have happened to them every week show significant boosts in happiness, studies have found. It seems the act of focusing on the positive helps people remember reasons to be glad. 4. Use your strengths - Another study asked people to identify their greatest strengths, and then to try to use these strengths in new ways. For example, someone who says they have a good sense of humor could try telling jokes to lighten up business meetings or cheer up sad friends. This habit, too, seems to heighten happiness. 5. Commit acts of kindness - Helping others also helps ourselves. People who donate time or money to charity, or who altruistically assist people in need, report improvements in their own happiness.

Bloom box challenges: Reliability, cost

The start-up now faces the gritty task of delivering products that are reliable and cheap. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Bloom Energy held a press event Wednesday morning detailing the Bloom box fuel cell, which is designed to be stacked into small blocks and housed in a unit about the size of a refrigerator. Luminaries in attendance included California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, legendary venture capitalist John Doerr, Google co-founder Larry Page, and top executives from heavyweight companies such as eBay, Wal-Mart, and FedEx. The combination within the Bloom box of oxygen and fuel creates a chemical reaction, producing electricity. The box, which promises to deliver generous amounts of power in a small space and to change peoples dependency on traditional power grids--all for less than $3,000 for a home unit--is already in use at places such as Google, eBay, and Wal-Mart. Probably the single most fundamental promise made by Bloom Energy CEO K.R. Sridhar at Wednesdays event was that by starting with a 25-watt fuel cell building block, products can be scaled up from 1kW "home" solutions to systems delivering hundreds of kilowatts for businesses or communities.

Tendulkar praises team effort

Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 200, the first ever double century in ODIs, as India claimed an emphatic 153-run victory to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The Little Master built partnerships with Karthik (79), Yusuf Pathan (36) and Dhoni (68) as India reach a mammoth total of 401 for three. "I thought I was stroking the ball well, timing the ball well. The ball was coming nicely on to the bat," Tendulkar told Sky Sports 1. "Every over a big shot was being played and was being played consistently. Because of Dinesh and MS we were able to pick up a big total. "I dont know how to react to this," he added. "I would like to dedicate this double hundred to all the people of India who stood with me for the last 20 years. I really appreciate their support. This is for all the people in India." The 36-year-old, who was presented with a silver bat as a reward for 20 years in the game and will have a pavilion at the Gawalior ground named after him, claimed it was not until he was 25 runs short that he felt a double hundred was possible.

Are non-smokers smarter than smokers?

Dr. Mark Weiser and colleagues from Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer found that young men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day or more had IQ scores 7.5 points lower than non-smokers. "Adolescents with poorer IQ scores might be targeted for programs designed to prevent smoking," they conclude in the journal Addiction. While there is evidence for a link between smoking and lower IQ, many studies have relied on intelligence tests given in childhood, and have also included people with mental and behavioral problems, who are both more likely to smoke and more likely to have low IQs, Weiser and his team noted. To better understand the smoking-IQ relationship, the researchers looked at 20,211 18-year-old men recruited into the Israeli military. The group did not include anyone with major mental health problems, because these individuals are disqualified from military service. According to the researchers, 28 percent of the study participants smoked at least one cigarette a day, around 3 percent said they were ex-smokers, and 68 percent had never smoked. The smokers had significantly lower intelligence test scores than non-smokers, and this remained true even after the researchers accounted for socioeconomic status measured by how many years of formal education a recruits father had completed.

Modi Slams Railway Budget Of Mamata

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday alleged that UPA government has continued with its policy of injustice toward his state. While, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Congress applauded the railway budget for not hiking the passenger fares and announcing to start new trains from here along with proposal to expand rail line network of the state. "The railway budget presented today is wayward and lacks vision of development along with the economic progress being made by the country," Modi said in a statement reacting to the railway budget presented by minister Mamata Banerjee. "Consecutive railway budgets have done injustice to the fast economically developing state like Gujarat. This years budget was also the same," Modi further said. "There is no political will to improve the infrastructure of railways in the budget presented today," Modi further said. "The budget shows that goods transport by railways had come down to 20.89 per cent this year as compared to 24 per cent in 2001-02, which says that people are preferring transporting goods by road instead of using rail network," he added. "Transportation by road is costlier and is adding to the high inflation," Modi said. Modi demanded that Centre should form an inquiry committee for quality reforms of railway infrastructure network. Gujarat AICC secretary in charge Sudhakar Reddy described the budget as the best ever presented in the country. According to him, union railway minister Mamta Banerjee has not increased the passenger fare, freight rates and has initiated measures to ensure safety and security of the railways passengers. He also lauded the measures introduced in the budget to encourage public private partnership (PPP) in the new railway projects and track development. The budget was also hailed by the GCCI. "This budget is what the country requires while coming out of global recession. The concession of Rs 100 granted in this budget on transportation of kerosene and food grains is a good step to curb soaring prices of commodities," President Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry Rupesh Shah said.

Suniel Shetty moves to Little Italy

The previous one had an Indian and Chinese menu, unlike the new speciality eatery. Also, this one is strictly veg, to cater to the Gujarati community, as the eatery is near the diamond market. Suniel admits, "My father has given it to the Little Italy group to manage." Suniel explains his emotional attachment to the place, "Wed closed down Mischief Dining Bar and wouldve gotten a hefty rent if wed leased the place out to a company, but we decided to go ahead with a restaurant. It is dads dream to have a restaurant there. If Id rented out the place, I couldnt have rented out his dream." An emotional Suniel continues, "When he came to Mumbai in 1947, dad used to work there as a cleaner-waiter. It was an Udipi restaurant at the time. He later went on to be become the manager. Nearly fifty years ago, he bought the place over. Its his entire journey from the age of 9 to the time he became the owner." Later, Suniel converted the Udipi restaurant into an Indian one. "Now weve given the Little Italy people the run of the place. Its in an essentially vegetarian area comprising predominantly of Maharashtrians, Marwaris and Gujaratis so it makes sense to have a vegetarian family restaurant there." The actor adds that his father likes to go there once in a while and dine, "In fact, when it opened, dad had the first meal there." Although they have renovated and re-designed the restaurant in an Italian way they have done it keeping in mind that its a heritage structure. "The outside decor is stone balconies with red flowers -- just like we find in Italy. Its a fine dining family restaurant along with a lounge and bar. The inside is very Italian with clean, simple, elegant lines. Though the food in the main restaurant will remain strictly Italian, the lounge will have mixed starters and different cuisines for birthday parties, anniversaries and regular parties."

Experts warn of catastrophe from cyberattacks

Computer-based network attacks are slowly bleeding U.S. businesses of revenue and market advantage, while the government faces the prospect of losing in an all-out cyberwar, experts told Senators in a hearing on Tuesday. "If the nation went to war today in a cyberwar, we would lose," said Michael McConnell, executive vice president of Booz Allen Hamiltons national security business and a former director of national security and national intelligence. "Were the most vulnerable. Were the most connected. We have the most to lose." The U.S. will not be able to mitigate the risk from cyberattack until the government gets more actively involved in protecting the nations network, which may not occur until after a "catastrophic event" happens, McConnell said in testimony during a hearing of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. "The governments role will change to become more active," he said. "Were going to morph the Internet from .com to .secure." The subject of the hearing was the Cyber Security Act of 2009, which would regulate organizations and companies that provide critical infrastructure for the U.S., require licensing and certification for cybersecurity professionals, and provide funding for grant and scholarship programs. The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the Cyber Security Act earlier this month.

Russia Rules Out Joining US-Dominated NATO

They saying such a move would jeopardise its sovereignty as it asserted that it was capable of ensuring its security. "To join the organisation, dominated by the US, would jeopardise the sovereignty of Russia," Moscows NATO envoy Dmitry Rogozin said. Commenting on US Secretary of State Hillary Clintons major NATO policy speech, Rogozin told Rossiya 24 TV channel: "There was no such need as Russia was capable of ensuring its security." With Russia marking the 92nd anniversary of foundation of the Red Army as the Day of the Defender of Fatherland today, Rogozin said that NATO needs reforms as in its present form it has become the "instrument of projecting US interests" on the global scale. Earlier speaking on NATO policy, Clinton had underscored that the US-led military bloc poses no threat to Russia, which in its new military doctrine has identified its eastward expansion and possible inclusion of former Soviet states of Ukraine and Georgia as a major threat to the security of the ex-Communist nation. "While Russia faces challenges to its security, NATO is not among them. We want a cooperative NATO-Russia relationship that produces concrete results and draws NATO and Russia closer together," Clinton said in her foreign policy speech on NATO on Monday. Moscow -- which has resumed its cooperation with the bloc with the framework of NATO-Russia Council stalled due to five-day Caucasus war in August 2008 with NATO aspirant Georgia -- has agreed to provide air and land corridors for supplies to the US-led troops in Afghanistan. However, it has refused to send its troops to the war-torn country as some NATO members had suggested. Clintons NATO speech was preceded by the Moscow visit of the "Eminent Persons Group" of the bloc led by former US Secretary of State Madeline Albright.

Sabkush Headlines: Moles Not sunshine,

Moles Not sunshine,

It’s not sunlight but moles that have the highest role in increasing the risk of skin cancer, say scientists who have claimed that the perils of sunbathing are grossly ‘overstated’. Scientists have said that sunshine is not the main cause of melanoma, but the number of moles on your skin is the most important factor in the risk of getting this dangerous form of skin cancer. The findings have re-ignited the debate over whether official health warnings about avoiding the sun are overstated. The scientists involved in the study maintain that sunshine causes only a small proportion of melanoma cases, but in their opinion health warnings would be more useful if they focused on people who have more than 100 moles, and taught them to check regularly the moles for changes in shape, size or colour. However, melanoma can be treated, for instance by the early removal of a suspicious mole, but it is the most serious type of skin cancer, as it can spread to other organs in the body. The cancer can start in an existing mole or on normal-looking skin, and can occur in people who have no moles but have fair skin and freckles. In a recent study, researchers from Queensland, Australia, Montreal, Canada and Philadelphia, America, led by King’s College London, identified two genes, which dictate how many moles someone will have, and their risk of getting skin cancer.

Neighbourhood affects diabetics

Previous studies have shown that the socio-economic characteristics of a neighbourhood can affect health status independent of socio-economic status of an individual. Neighbourhood environment influences diet and physical activity through the availability of grocery stores, recreational facilities and educational resources. In addition, neighbourhoods vary with regard to sources of chronic stress (noise, violence and poverty). The study involving 46,382 African-American women, the incidence of diabetes was the highest in those living in neighbourhoods with the lowest socio-economic status score after taking into account other risk factors for diabetes. "Our findings indicate that the risk of type 2 diabetes for African-American women is influenced not just by individual characteristics, but by the characteristics of the neighbourhoods in which they live," said senior author Julie Palmer, Sc.D., a senior epidemiologist at the Slone Epidemiology Center and professor of epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health. "Even women with the highest educational levels appeared to be affected by their neighbourhood environment," she added.

Lorgat: India safe to host World Cup

"The World Cup is the big piece of work that we have to deliver and we intend to do so. The whole issue of security is dynamic, but we will assess it very carefully and implement whatever measures are necessary to ensure safety and security. I do not share the same concerns for India as Pakistan," The News quoted Lorgat, as saying. Clouds of concern began looming large over next year`s world cup after the leakage of a security report that advises cricketers to seriously consider withdrawing from the Indian Premier League due of credible terrorism threat by Al-Qaeda. Written by the England team`s security advisor Reg Dickason, the report has been commissioned by players` associations in England, Australia and South Africa. The report further antagonises relations between IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and FICA chief executive Tim May. Any major disruption to the IPL would automatically put next year`s World Cup in difficulty, with India co-hosting it with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as a major party.

Daily deals: Theyre taking over your town

Theres a scene in the 1989 comedy "Troop Beverly Hills" in which rival bands of Wilderness Girls attempt to best one another in a fundraiser by selling boxes of the same cookies to the households of a single upper-crust neighborhood--and unfortunately for the underdog protagonists, their arch-enemies have beaten them to the punch at just about every house. Thats what it may soon look like for the explosion of companies offering ultra-discounted, fire-sale daily deals for local businesses, which have fast become the Webs latest retail craze. Heres how it works. Youll sign up for an online newsletter that will advertise a different deal every day: a coupon for $10 for a bikram yoga lesson that usually goes for $25, $15 for a $30 tour of historic New York pizzerias (slices not included), or $25 for $50 worth of organic grocery delivery. The catch is that either theres a very limited number of "deals" available, or more likely, the service follows a "group buying" model in which a certain number of people need to opt in before any of them get it. Taking a cue from geek favorite Woot, which offered a single item for sale each day in a limited quantity, the model was exposed to new demographics when luxury sample sale outlets like Gilt and Ideeli debuted, and has now moved on to a market that the digital advertising industry has long hoped to capture: independent local businesses. Even though theres a clear market leader in Groupon--which has raised a notable amount of funding, declared that its profitable, and swelled to over 30 local editions--rival city-specific daily deals newsletters are absolutely everywhere.

China Launches Strict New Internet Controls

The state-sanctioned group that registers domain names in China froze registrations for new individual Web sites in December after state media complained that not enough was being done to check whether sites provided pornographic content. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that ban was being lifted, but would-be operators would now have submit their identity cards and photos of themselves as well as meet in person with regulators and representatives of service providers before their sites could be registered. It said the rule was aimed at cracking down on pornography. China has the worlds biggest online population, with 384 million Internet users. The government operates the worlds most extensive system of Web monitoring and filtering, blocking pornographic sites as well as those seen as subversive to communist rule. The new regulations come as the government is in talks with Google Inc. about whether the U.S.-based Internet giant will be allowed to continue operating in China after saying in January it would no longer cooperate with the countrys Web censorship. The two sides have given no details of the status of their discussions.

The 65-run ninth wicket partnership between Wayne Parnell (49 off 47 balls) and Dale Steyn (35 off 19 balls) off just 38 balls nearly did the trick before South Africa, in pursuit of a 299-run winning target, were all out for 297. South Africa needed 10 runs of the last over sent down by Praveen Kumar and eventually a boundary off the last ball. There was intense drama as Praveen beat Parnells bat and the ecstatic crowd invaded the ground to celebrate a win only to realise that it was a wide ball. Praveen then came up with the final delivery and a desperate Parnell, going for two runs, ran himself out as South Africa finished just one run short of Indias total. Captain Jacques Kallis, who had claimed three Indian wickets for 29 runs from his seven tight overs, top-scored for South Africa with a 97-ball 89 -- his 75th half-century. Put into bat, India had earlier posted 298 for nine at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, riding on a string of cameos from Suresh Raina (58), Virender Sehwag (46), Dinesh Karthik (44) and Virat Kohli (31) which took them near the 300-mark. South Africa, on their part, got off to a positive start. After the first five-over lull, their openers Herschelle Gibbs (27) and Loots Bosman (29) broke lose to reach 50 in 7.3 overs before Ravindra Jadeja brought India back into the match. Gibbs had milked 17 runs of S Sreesanths first over, prompting Dhoni to withdraw the bowler from attack, and the visitors threatened to run away with the match before Praveen Kumar castled Bosman and Jadejas double blow claimed Gibbs and AB de Villiers (25).

Sabkush Headlines: Jennifer Lopez Sings What Is Love At San Remo Festival

control problem there. Whats really impressive, though, is Operas performance: Its graphics rendering is unbelievable. Chrome 4 had us already whistling on the Canvas geography map rendering test, with a 31.75 score. Opera 10.5 Beta 1 scores a 63.50 on that same test.

India, however, have struggled to translate the superiority they have shown in Tests into the shorter formats of the game and Kallis hopes knowledge gained from association with Indias players during the IPL would give his team the edge. "A lot of teams are adapting to the conditions in the subcontinent a lot better because of spending more time here," said Kallis. "You end up playing with a lot of Indian players during the IPL, so you see how they do things and how their mentality works. "All of that does help and players all around the world are learning how to adapt better here now." Kallis was appointed captain after Graeme Smith was ruled out due to a finger injury and he leads a slightly different team from the one which did duty in the Test series, with the likes of opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs, off-spinner Roelof van der Merwe and fast bowler Albie Morkel - all of whom have IPL contracts - now in the ranks
