Vacationing in Thailand as she brings in her birthday today, actress Priyanka Chopra is barely able to speak coherently, reports Mid Day. "I had to scream so hard for a sequence in Saat Khoon Maaf, I lost my voice. Now, being in the water constantly while on holiday is not going to help my throat one bit," says Chopra, who turns 28 today. For her roles in Ashutosh Gowarikers Whats Your Raashee (12 characters) and Vishal Bharadwajs Saat Khoon Maaf (about a woman who goes through seven different marital experiences), Chopra studied cases of multiple-personality disorder. Now, for her role in Anurag Basus Silence, Chopra is not only willing to learn about psychological behaviour but she has agreed to go the whole hog. Chopra plans to visit and stay at a hand-picked institution thats devoted to looking after the mentally disturbed. Confirms a source, "At first, Priyanka was reluctant to take on the film since another leading lady (Katrina Kaif) was already on board. But when she understood the impact and nature of her role, Priyanka fell for it. She has preparing for it and intends to visit a few institutions, where she plans to spend at couple of days." Says Chopra, "I will begin shooting for Anurag Basus film in January 2011 after I complete Don 2. And yes, Im setting aside time to prepare for the part. I will need special training to be adept at playing the character. How many actors from my generation get challenges like this? If Im being given the opportunity, I better make the most of it," she said.

Despite her parents’ disapproval (they wanted to marry her off), Rachna joined a foreign airline. She began earning somewhere around Rs 50,000 per month, and suddenly there were frequent foreign trips, stays at five-star hotels, trendy clothes, hobnobbing with the rich and the famous, bogeying late nights. Rachna’s marriage to her pilot boyfriend lasted just one-and-a-half years. She accepts, “An independent lifestyle, fatigue, erratic sleeping patterns, numerous temptations, meeting new and interesting people made it difficult for me to share space with anyone.†She is now happily living on her own. “I have a boyfriend, we live in separate flats and I don’t intend to make it official,†she says firmly. Rachna took control of her life, but not everybody is as fortunate. Suicides among airhostesses in the recent past could be attributed to the combination of several socio and socio-economic factors. Disturbed due to the ‘differences’ with her pilot boyfriend, 24-year-old Anupama Acharya committed suicide by jumping off a five-storey building in Mumbai. A ‘troubled marriage’ pushed 25-year-old Sucheta Anand to suicide. Erratic work hours, family pressures and adjustments as a homemaker and domestic violence could be responsible for an airhostess’s life going awry. There are chances of girls from small towns succumbing to temptations more easily than the girls from big metros who must have seen it all. Says Perizad Irani, a flight attendant on British Airways, “I know of a colleague who fell for a captain, who was seeing half the world for the longest time. She came to her senses and married a sensible guy.†Reveals Deirdre Sampayo, director, Wings Airline Academy, “At times, they are not able to report to work and are found bogeying in a nightclub. Divorce is rising. Combine that with no job, which leads to frustration and they hit the bottle.†Strangely enough, there are many instances of airhostessess’s spouses not earning well enough. Says Seema Rawat, assistant general secretary, Cabin Crew Association, “There is a clash in values. They want her to wear Indian clothes and be there for every festival.†In the other extreme, says Rachna, “They are so desperate for her money that they don’t mind giving total freedom.†With domestic carriers flying almost 100 hours every week as compared to 25 to 30 hours in the past, most flight attendants are flying back to back flights. Besides fatigue, it leaves them with very little time for their families. Hence, 70 per cent of airhostesses quit their jobs within five years of working. Says Seema, “In the West, airhostesses don’t spend nights outside the country after maternity. Unlike the West, the companies here are not willing to put them on ground.†Adds Perizad, “In a foreign airline, women have the option of working part-time after maternity.†The other incidents that could diminish the aura of glamour and excitement, is a deluge of molestation cases on board in the last few weeks. A leading Bollywood star was witnessed hurling abuses in Hindi at a white airhostess when he did not get his choice of liquor. “Heavy drinkers and smokers are agitated when they don’t get free booze and are not allowed to smoke. Some passengers even lodge false complaints when we don’t reciprocate their advances. They think they have bought a girl in a skirt along with the ticket. Some men take the aisle seat to get close,†says Preeti Raikar, a flight attendant on Air India. Says Sabina Khan, an airhostess who has moved to British Airways, “Indian mannerisms are far from international standards. I remember an old man whistling and singing throughout the journey. Birbhum District Magistrate Soumitra Mohan confirmed the death of over 40 people in the accident that occurred 191 km from Howrah on the Bolpur-Rampurhat section of Eastern Railways Howrah division at around 2.15 a.m. More deaths are likely as many bodies have yet to be recovered. "We have recovered 32 bodies so far. More than 70 injured passengers from the Vanachal Express have been rescued," Mohan said. However, Chief Security Commissioner of Eastern Railway S. Sahoo told IANS: "We fear more than 50 have died." The dead includes the driver and assistant driver of the Uttarbanga Express and the guard of the Vananchal Express. An Eastern Railway spokesman said the Vananchal Express was standing at platform 4 when the speeding Uttarbanga Express, coming from New Coochbehar, hit it from the rear. Three rear coaches of the Vananchal Express bore the brunt of the collision and were badly mangled. Such was the impact of the collision that one of the coaches went up to the overbridge. The authorities were using gas-cutters to cut open the coaches and bring out the dead and rescue the injured. Eye-witnesses said the Vananchal Express was about to leave the station when the accident occurred. Sainthia Government Railway Police (GRP) sources said the injured passengers were being sent to hospitals in Sainthia and Birbhum district headquarters Suri. Train movement on the down line has been disrupted in the Bolpur-Rampurhat section. The down Malda-Howrah Intercity Express has been cancelled and many trains were stranded on the down line. Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee is slated to go to the spot later in the day. Eastern Railway General Manager V.N. Tripathy has left for the spot in a special train. An accident relief train and a medical relief train have also reached Sainthia. Rescue operation teams have reached Sainthia from Rampurhat, Asansol and Burdwan. The Eastern Railway has opened two helplines (numbers 23503537 and 23503535) at Sealdah for news of the victims. Helplines have also been opened at Howrah, Bhagalpur and Jamalpur atations.

Sangakkara (103) notched up his 22nd century while Paranavitana (110 batting) scored his maiden ton as the hosts exposed Indias toothless bowling attack to pile up a comfortable 256 for two at close on a rain-truncated opening day. The Sri Lankan captain was dropped when on 65 off part-timer Virender Sehwag, who was introduced midway in the second session, with his counterpart and wicket-keeper Dhoni failing to pouch an edge. Opener Paranavitana was more circumspect initially, waiting for bad balls but he opened up after reaching his fifty, fifth in 11 Tests. India also missed a half chance to remove Paranavitana on 51, with a forward diving Yuvraj failing to reach the ball after the Sri Lankan opener uppishly cut a Sehwag delivery. Those couple of chances were all the Indians had as the bowlers lacked penetration and consistency to trouble the Sri Lankans. Paranavitana went on to score his best Test score in his 11th match, his earlier best being 73 against Pakistan in Colombo last year. Harbhajan got the drift and a bit of turn in both the sessions but that was not enough to get any wicket while left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was also expensive though he extracted some turn. Pacer Ishant Sharma gave away just two runs in his first two overs of the second session before conceding 19 in his next two and his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni took him off. Fielding one of the weakest bowling attacks in a long time, luck also did not favour India as Dhoni lost the toss after the start of the match was delayed for 30 minutes due to wet outfield. With the depleted Indian bowlers failing to take the advantage of the moisture after heavy overnight rains, the Sri Lankan openers Paranavitana and Dilshan were off to a quick start, sharing 55 runs for the first wicket in 11 overs. Deja Dup Backup Utility and LuckyBackup both are easy to use offer more than the bare-bones features typical of this software category. Both are ideal choices for personal use as well as small-business data archiving. Why the Need? Dealing with data backup is really an exercise in being prepared. In my case, I store my primary data on a large capacity thumb drive. I use this USB device to access and save all my working files as well as my data archives. On my two desktop computers, two laptops and one netbook, I routinely copy the open files to the hard drives as I move from computer to computer using the syncing feature of a file management program. In theory that gives me two copies of all my stuff at all times. Plus I have two external hard drives onto which I periodically perform similar directory-syncing operations. So trusting in the false assumption that my data backups were under control, I did not use a bona-fide backup app regularly. So much for false assumptions. On a recent trip I lost the file-encrypted master USB storage device. That left me with just the hard drives content on the laptop with me. A quick fix involved buying a new USB drive and dragging all the data to it from the hard drive. Backup Apps Still Needed Soon after, however, a series of hardware failures struck that put what I thought to be a foolproof system in question. A relatively new desktop crashed and burned. That necessitated a full data retrieval for its replacement from one of the external hard drives. Soon after that, not one but both laptops had their power cords short out. That obviously caused limited or no access to the data kept as backup on the hard drive. In both cases the batteries hadnt charged as part of the cords malfunction. I just didnt notice the notification icons telling me that the batteries were discharging. As unlikely as this equipment failure scenario may seem, it happened. My carelessness and the distractions of working while traveling caught me off-guard. I learned that even fail-safe data plans need a backup. I did not suffer any permanent critical data loss. But if I did not have data stored on multiple locations, that outcome would have been much more likely. Workable Solutions I almost learned my lesson the hard way. In case lightning strikes with more force, now I am better prepared to ward off data loss woes. Deja Dup is a simple backup tool. However, beer with 2.5 per cent alcohol can still be called "low alcohol" beer because it contains less alcohol than the usual 3.2 per cent alcohol. The first step in beer-making is malting the barley. During this process grains are moistened or sprouted, the enzymes in this mix breaks down the starch. At a particular point, this is stopped by heating it. The colour of the beer is related to the temperature to which malt is heated. The malt is then ground and a pigment is mixed in hot water. The insoluble material extract is separated and the fermentable extract is called wort. Flowers of hops are added following which the yeast is added. One serving of regular beer (1 can or 330 ml) provides 116 calories, 13 g of carbohydrates in regular beer and 4 g in light beer, 9 mg protein, 18 mg calcium, 0.11 mg iron, 1.6 mg niacin and low levels of other B complex vitamins, indicative of its low nutrient density. Its comparison with milk seems far-fetched to say the least. Being high in carbohydrates, it contributes to a "beer belly", which is a determinant of the waist circumference. However, results of some studies contradict one another. A report filed in Los Angeles Superior Court stated that Lohan had passed random drug and alcohol tests between May 27th and June 24th - but had taken five prescribed medications, including amphetamines and opiates. Chief Probation Officer Donald H. Blevins report adds that the prescription pills are "not a violation of probation" but that, "The defendant indicates she has been on the same prescription medication for as long as she can remember." According to the papers, Lohan regularly takes antidepressants Zoloft and trazodone, stimulant Adderall, Nexium for acid reflux and super-strength painkiller Dilaudid for dental troubles. In the documents, Blevins praises the Mean Girls stars progress, writing, "(Lohan) states she wants to move on with her life, and feels that she has done everything that the court has asked her to do. Defending his remarks, Gadkari said in Kolkata yesterday that there was no question of his tendering an apology over the issue. Singh, in-charge of Congress affairs in Uttar Pradesh, also asked the BJP to explain its ties with the killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. "Advani was at the helm for six years but he did not hang the killers of Rajiv Gandhi. Will the party explain its relationship with them?" he asked. "We have been holding talks with Ajit Singh" but nothing concrete had emerged yet, he said when asked about the outcome of the parleys. In its 16th successive, successful mission, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle placed five satellites into the predestined orbit after a precision launch on Monday, a feat that elated the space community as it came after the failure of last launch. The payloads included the latest remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT 2B, a nanosatellite fabricated by students of a consortium of private engineering colleges in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, ALSAT -2A of Algeria, AISSAT 1 of Canada and TISAT of Switzerland. A visibly pleased K Radhakrishnan, the new director of the space agency who tasted defeat in his first mission as the chief when the GSLV D3 failed three months ago, said that the whole mission including the launch vehicle and satellites worked "extremely well as expected" to make the project a success. CARTOSAT 2B, the 17th in a series of remote sensing satellites that India has launched so far, is a sophisticated piece of equipment with a state-of-the-art panchromatic camera on board. Data from the satellite will find applications in cartography, urban and rural infrastructure development and management, and GIS, said ISRO officials. The core alone vehicle, a lighter version that does not have the strap-on motors that boost the ascent, cost about Rs 80 crore while the satellite cost Rs 175 crore. Besides the main payload, the students effort named STUDSAT is a picosatellite weighing less than a kilogram is the next biggest leap for Indian space research, an effort that Radhakrishnan termed was a national investment.
