Confused about what to buy and what to chuck? Designers tell us some must-haves Menswear often costs more than the pretty girlie clothes that women effortlessly pick off the streets. Since men do not have much a choice in this case, a smart approach to buying fashionable clothes is remaining up-to-date about current trends and be style-wise. A bit of mix-and-match with loads of attitude can prove handy too in this case. Designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed made a simple observation about men in Mumbai — Most of them dressed the way their workplace dictated. Since maximum number of hours (right from 6 - 10 hours) are spent slogging behind the computer or making sales pitches outdoors, corporate wear spelled a semi-formal to formal look for most. - If you wear sneakers or casual sports shoes every day to work, that probably means you are wearing jeans to team up the look. Then go for a fabric belt and stay away from serious leather belts. Suspenders on the other hand, don’t suit most people and definitely not for casual workplace atmosphere. Designer Rocky S finds ‘combinations’ an important styling aspect. Colours would play a big role in mix-and-match looks. - Matching ties and shirts: If you are still sporting a solid-coloured shirt with a tie of the same (or slightly-off) colour, then understand that this look is dated. Try mixing things up a little and experiment with colours. Ties are a great way to express yourself, but keeping it tasteful is your best bet. Diagonal stripes, plaids and subtle patterns like anchors, chains etc can complement your shirt. Rocky adds that men who wear a tie to their workplace must experiment with the many different ways to knot the tie. - Flat-front pants or pleats? It’s natural observation that most men try to avoid wearing clothes that are too flashy or aren’t conventionally accepted. For those men, there are two patterns of trousers — pleated or flat fronts. Designer Kunal Rawal says that guys wear pleats because it’s more comfortable or because flat-fronts are more for athletic bodies. But the truth is that most men can wear a flat-front trouser. If you want more room then buy them a little big and have them brought in at the waist. This can be done at the store where you buy your clothes or by an independent tailor. And lastly, flat-front trousers are much more fashionable. Pleated trousers are passe. Designer Troy Costa cues that socks should ideally match pants and shoes. - Socks should be worn a bit above the ankle level if the shoes are formal. And ideally, they should match the colour of your pants, though preferably not the exact same shade. If you wearing all blacks, then black socks is fine. An obvious conclusion is that colourful socks should be worn with your sneakers but only in the gym. Designer Krishna Mehta says Indian wear should have a select place in every man’s wardrobe. On festivals, a well-fitted kurta in prints, tie-and-dye or plain colours can turn out to be a comfortable and good choice. - Open sandals and Kolhapuri chappals are an ideal choice of footwear with Indian clothes.
