It’s a combination of physical and social skills. As Dr Catherine Hakim of London School of Economics puts it, “Erotic capital not just spells out good looks but dollops of sex appeal, social attractiveness, liveliness, presentation and sexuality put together to create the right ‘package’. It’s time we accept that people no more look at beauty as something superficial. To be successful and popular in a fiercely competitive world, you should know how to turn ordinary into extraordinary with a combination of social and physical skills. Ad-man Prahlad Kakkar says, “The ad industry gets millions of resumes everyday. To stand out in the crowd, you got to have chutzpah and charm along with dashing looks. I only hire good-looking people because I want to see nice faces around me! And it’s not only women, men are also expected to have the desired erotic capital.†The Obamas, not conventionally beautiful, can easily attribute their success to their erotic capital. Both Barack and Michelle have smartly utilised their innate social intelligence and body language to reach where they stand today. So, how does one acquire the desired erotic capital? Build up your confidence and develop an extrovert demeanour. People should notice that ‘spark’ when you walk into a room! Model and fashion choreographer Marc Robinson says, “Whenever people like Queenie Singh, Feroz Gujral or Ayesha Thapar walk into a room, all eyes are on them. They have an unspoken charisma as they combine beauty, social skills, attractiveness and fitness to make an impact.†A media student from Chennai confesses, “During an on-campus hiring, selectors chose candidates who were vivacious.†While beauty is God-gifted, erotic capital can be acquired. Grooming expert Ruksana Eisa, says, “I’m presently working with the Femina Miss India contestants and as a part of grooming I’m teaching them important concepts like holding a good conversation and having a positive body language.†Eisa opines that Indians are brought up to be introverts. “Such is our upbringing that hardly anyone walks into a roomful of people and feels comfortable.†Model Nayanika Chatterjee says, “Maturity comes with age and wisdom. As you age, you gain more confidence and authority, learn to dress better, and lose your awkwardness.â€
